Flame Series - Lingua
This sculpture is part of The Flame Series, carved from Siberian Elm rescued from an acreage near East St. Paul. As this section was drying, deep cracks split through the form. I filled them with brass. Not to hide the damage, but to speak through it.
The name Lingua means tongue, or language. The grain arches like a single tongue of flame caught in motion. The brass lines cut downward like they melted, and then solidified in place. The piece speaks about how fire consumes, and harsh words once spoken, can’t be taken back.
Once the fire has faded, and the tension has lifted, what remains isn’t consumed, but transformed.
Siberian Elm and Brass. 11 Inches.
