Hawaiian Koa | Brass inlay | 17"

This bowl was carved from Koa wood that left Hawai'i roughly 30 years ago as a gift to a carver on the Canadian prairies. When he grew too old to work, and no one in his family wanted the wood, he read about my practice in the newspaper and sought me out to pass it along. I carved it by hand in Winnipeg, Manitoba, 4,000 miles from the forest it grew in.

The hand-textured ridges follow the direction the grain wanted to go. A natural fissure was repaired with brass inlay in the tradition of Kintsugi. The figure of the Koa moves beneath the surface like something still alive.

Ebb Tide is the centerpiece of Still Life, in Koa, a multimedia installation pairing this bowl with an original poem, musical score, and video tracing the wood's journey from volcanic soil to finished form. The work is currently in production.

Not for sale.

Size: 17" | Material: Hawaiian Koa (gifted) | Finish: Natural oil and wax
