Wabi-Sabi Series - Phomopsis #1
This vase was carved from a Russian olive tree that once stood on Selkirk Avenue. The tree was killed by a slow infestation of ants, and by a fungal disease known as Phomopsis canker, which hollowed it from the inside, darkening the heartwood.
But instead of hiding the damage, I chose to carve through it. At the centre of this piece is a shadowed cavity, blackened by the fungus, framed by the olive’s flowing golden grain. It’s raw, beautiful, and full of quiet tension.
It’s a piece about how even after disease and decay,
what remains can still be called beautiful.
