Sculptural Vessels - Turtle Shell Bowl
This 13-inch bowl was carved from a Manitoba maple that once stood in St. Boniface. It was broken during an ice storm …. a violent moment of destruction now an act of creation. The red and pink streaks you see in the grain are natural, a response by the tree to trauma. When stressed or damaged, maple sometimes releases pigments as a kind of defense … and what was once a wound becomes colour.
The exterior is hand-textured, rough and geometric, reminiscent of a turtle shell. It’s a deliberate reference to Turtle Island, and to the belief that land itself carries memory, protection, and story.
The shape is asymmetrical. The edge is uneven.
Nothing here is polished smooth — and that’s exactly the point.
