This sculpture is part of The Flame Series, a collection born from trees once destined for firewood, now reborn as flame-like forms.
This piece was carved from Russian Olive salvaged from Selkirk Avenue in Winnipeg’s North End. The tree was hollowed and killed by ants, but its story didn’t end there. In its grain and curves, something new takes shape, a proud arc that hints at a rooster’s cry, or a flame caught in motion.
I carved it by feel, preserving the energy in the wood, the motion, the memory, the wake-up call. A symbol of defiance. Of rebirth. Of life that refuses to stay quiet.
