The tree stood dead in a St. Boniface yard for several years before an arborist — a friend, taking it down for friends — brought it to the studio. Ants had tunneled it; the heartwood had gone to rot. The good wood was a rumor under gray weathered bark.
This bowl is what the decay couldn’t reach: golden Manitoba maple burl, bird’s-eye figure clustering around every old scar, carved as one organic form. The rim is the tree’s own live edge, left exactly as the weather made it.
